Children are spectacular word learners. According to some estimates, they acquire on average one new word every waking hour during the pre-school years. By the time they begin school, they know as many as 14,000 words.
Parents are well aware of this amazing accomplishment, and many have been stunned by the rate of vocabulary growth in their young children.
Through our research program, we are trying to understand children's lexical development, by examining the types of information they recruit to acquire the meanings of new words.

All studies entail a one-time visit to our Centre at the UBC Vancouver Campus. Your child would be with you the entire time. Visits are typically 30-minutes long and we have reserved nearby parking spaces for your convenience.
Each participant receives a small gift on behalf of our Centre, and an honorary UBC degree certificate.
